Eight Cities in Pictures
DW-WORLD presents pictures from eight cities affected by the war. Some were destroyed and rose up again from the ashes, others are forever scarred by destruction.
Berlin
As the German capital, Berlin was heavily bombed by the Allies. It was only after German unification that the city returned to its pre-war status.
Hiroshima
After Japan refused to surrender, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, utterly destroying the city.
London
Germany’s Blitzkrieg destroyed many British cities and killed some 60,000 civilians. When the war ended, the British celebrated in grand style.
Jerusalem
After World War II, many Jews left Europe and settled in Jerusalem. Today it is a city on the front of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
New York
One of the best known images of May 8, 1945 is of Times Square in New York, where thousands gathered to celebrate the end of the war.
Paris
Paris rejoiced in 1945 when the Allies liberated the French metropolis. Triumphant marches past historic landmarks marked the end of the war.
Volgograd
At the site of history’s greatest tank battle, Russia’s memory of those who died fighting the Germans is forever present.
Warsaw
In 1939, Hitler's army marched into the proud Polish city and forced thousands of Jews to live in the Warsaw Ghetto.
